*One my troops get close, the Hobbit archers move away from the main force. They then get close enough so that they are in range, returning fire on the archers, as well as peppering the infantry. They maintain a loose formation, so as to be less of a target for the onagers.*
*The rest of my forces break out of formation and into a dead run towards your troops. In the front are the Hill-men, who begin screaming blood-curdling war cries. Following behind at a slightly more measured pace are the Rangers and Militia, who still stay close behind the Hill-Men.*
*My archers lauch volleys of arrows into your Hobbits and move back slightly out of their range* *The onagers fire chain shot (Same as with LB at the castle except less at a time) into your hillmen. The militia and Dunedain get hit my the missed shots* *The ballistae and scorpions fire into your Hillmen and militia as well* *The other units hide behind shields ect. to stop themselves getting hit. The pikemen and shieldmen form a phalanx formation at the front to prepare for your front lines smashing into them*
I honestly have, like, no recollection of anything here. So we're just gonna wing this.
*My hobbit archers continue to move forward, staying in range*
*My melee troops arrive as quickly as they can, staying in a loose formation to avoid being an easy target for the siege weapons. My leading hill-men hit your front ranks just as they are closing the Phalanx.*
The day of prosperity makes one forget adversity; The day of adversity makes one forget prosperity.
OOC: OK. First, you're attacking the dwarves. Second, the ballistae I spoke of were the Walking Artillery, not the siege engines. Third, the Dwarves aren't actually in battle yet.
The horses are rearing up and screaming because they stepped on caltrops. No horse can step on something like this without rearing up and screaming.
It's not that hard to anticipate an attack from behind and watch for it. It's also not hard to see a cavalry charge coming from a distance, especially on the plains of Lebennin.
IC: The Crossbowmen and the Artillery continue their attack until the cavalry has left. However, several siege engines were destroyed and many operators were smashed.
400 of the Gondorian Pikemen move towards this army.
OOC: Right. Sorry.
Please direct me to the post where you laid down caltrops.
It's easy to watch for, yes. But they no reason to watch for it. They have no idea only a fragment of Osgiliath remains under Gondorian control. They have no way of knowing the enemy has even crossed the Anduin. It's easy to see, yes. But they have no reason to be looking anywhere but the fierce struggle they are very close to.
OOC: OK. Because I can't claim deus ex machina or say that it's standard procedure, there aren't any.
*The Gondorians arrive and form a pike wall behind the remaining siege engines.* *All Dwarven ranged weapons turn their fire to the Haradrim once again.* *Surviving mangonels fire the aforementioned spiked bowling balls of doom*
*The Guards of Osgiliath form up around the trebuchets to protect them* *The trebuchets continue firing on the enemy*

OOC: OK, great.
Now is probably the best time to calculate losses.
Now, generally, crossbows would penetrate plate armour. However, this is moving cavalry we're talking about. This means that the chances of missing or hitting at an angle are significantly increased. There's also the fact that my troops have shields as well, meaning the projectiles would have to penetrate two layers in order to hit the rider. Because of this, losses on my part will be a lot lower than they would be with most troops.
I need to have a further think about this, but I'll post my first recommended figures shortly.

Well, let's see. You said that one part of the line was thoroughly smashed, so probably a quarter to a third of the siege engines are damaged-completely inoperable. (And their operators, of course.)
Yes. The fact that a) These are heavy crossbows, with more stopping power than a normal crossbow and b) These are Dwarven crossbows, which outclass normal crossbows in almost every way should be remembered.
I'm confused as to what all is happening right now. MarshalCody, since you are resetting the troops, does that mean the positions of the troops in this battle have reset as well?
