*They close with the orcs threatening to attack halting the orcs.*
*Nulled.* They're both moving, so unless you have an army completely cavalry, they wouldn't have a chance.
I do have some cavalry though and catch you and unless the orcs wish to be run down by cav, they should form a into formations. which would slow them down allowing my troops to get in missile range and that would make your troops want to protect themselves even more, or attack my arrchers. and you said so your self that orcs are very selfish and would try to live than stand in marching order and fall to cavalry.
*Troops arrive from Bree. They set up near the southeastern border, and spread out into groups of sentries.*
*Some of the Sentries sight a band of orcs moving with haste into the Lone Lands.* They would have more distance to go, though not much. If you really want to, then I can have a volley of arrows shot, which is. . . 450 or more arrows, which should deal with than number of units in a sentry group for a big region like this.
The volleys of arrows would slow down your men allowing the dallians to catch them.

True. . . However, if my Trolls are at the back, than I would only need a loose formation to defend myself from cavalry, due to 1. my own cavalry (which I'm guessing is more than yours in worth, although not certain.) and 2. most of my units are pretty elite. Due to the looseness of the formation, the orcs could be moving in the same fashion. Oh, and due to my own cavalry, which has a number of bows in it's arsenal, your own men would most likely be in a formation of their own. Oh yes, and their is also the fact that you would have had to mobilize after I started moving (my troops were inside the half-built fortress, meaning that mobilization would be essentially secret.) And if you really want to start arguing small points, then we may as well take in sleeping schedules. Due to orcs being nocturnal, they would naturally leave at night time, meaning your men would have started with little rest, And it would drive a further gap with the mobilization. Oh yeah, also they would have left in a loose formation simply because that's how military travel works. Don't try to make an argument that a group of infantry will move faster than some other type of infantry.

But then you would loose your trolls. Not because they where smashed by the archers. And could you please give me one good piece of tolkien that says that orcs are nocturnal? If I remember I was in battle order in a battle, and if this was real life I would wonder why you weren't attacking and would have sent out scouts to see, which would have alerted me to your movement so then I could send my cavalry to attack you the moment you left your fort. And my troops weren't camped so they could march almost on a moments notice. Which they did. Why would my troops be in a formation? They are chasing you, they would be in a quick marching order but nor in a formation. You forget that it takes time to fire bows. Normally Bows where not carried pre-slung, and you would have to string the bows. Which takes time, as does gettinga large number of people to do anythings and with as unorganized as the orcs it would take longer. Giving my army plenty of time to fire a volley of preloaded crossbows. If this is going to get this picky I would like to summon the great and mighty KitKat

No, because that HArmored Trolls are fairly resistant to javelins, and you still have no counter to the Ranged Cavalry argument. The fact that they don't move in sunlight is a pretty good indicator. OK, their were theoritically weeks between that time. Due to the fact I wasn't building, you would have stopped sending scouts out. Why were they camped that way? Camped able to attack at a moment's notice, maybe. But it is impossible to keep a camp for weeks with it able to be packed up at a moments notice. You can't even do that for a day, because of the cook's supplies. Because I have cavalry myself. If cavalry "threatens the lives of my orcs" or whatever, the same would happen to you. You wouldn't have caught up to me in the first place, so those preloaded crossbows wouldn't come in to effect, especially not against Trolls.

First note, I don't believe that Tolkien ever called Orcs "nocturnal", but he did most certainly say that they hated the sun, and were substantially weakened by it. Hence Orcs tend to favor either dark places or else the night (or at least cloud cover). Second point, what fortress of MM's is this? Obviously not here (or Forochel or Angmar), because this is Bree-land. Are you guys referring to the one of the things either MM or Thrawn started in the Forodwaith, which I think hit ten and twenty percent, respectively? Those buildings are hardly even shells, and would scarcely hide any group of people. As far as concealment goes, those fortresses are little better than the usual mobile camps (especially since they would still need a camp set up inside the structure, as no living spaces had even been started, let alone finished), so there's really not much that you can do to keep mobilization secret. Third, unless one side has a significant speed advantage over the other, only armies already in the region or coming from the opposite side can really intercept another passing army. So if you (8L) followed MM in, you're probably going to follow him out too. However, depending upon conditions in the Forodwaith, there's a chance that you started out in a position ahead of him (you two will have to sort that out) and could intercept him there. Otherwise, I think you're stuck following him until he either reaches his destination or something else noteworthy happens.

I think his point here is that if the orcs are going very fast they will leave the trolls behind because trolls are slow.

but they don't need to be going fast, they just need to be going at an equal speed to the humans following them. And due to the fact that this isn't a sprint, the Humans either catch up out of breath (in which case, I'm completely OK fighting them) or the Trolls should keep up. Trolls aren't THAT slow. Yes, this one is heavily armored, but we've seen trolls with large rocks on their head run at a full sprint for several hundred yards, meaning that the armor wouldn't slow them enough. Oh, and the chase scene where that heavily Armored Troll is able to outrun a speeding Ram cart Through Ice and Water (both of which add resistance) until another troll stops him.

*Ahem* Movie trolls do that Trolls shouldn't be fast and I can't imagine a creature of such dimensions running or jogging as fast as humans for very long. I mean, they're essentially a big, unaerodynamic, really fat and tall orc OK, we can call it muscle, still weighs a lot

*Quite a few troops and siege weapons arrive here* *They move to block the Rhunian forces from going wherever they want to go, but don't come close to engaging (i.e. they look at what direction they are running in )*
OOC: I'm still going through the regions and figuring out exactly how many of EE's troops I have so I don't have an exact figure yet. I should get it finished tomorrow. Sorry guys

Trolls are a lot like elephants. They're not quick (by quick, I mean able to react in a short amount of time), but they aren't slow either (have a low rate of travel). Trolls are fairly tall, which means that while each of their steps are slow, they cover a pretty big distance, meaning that their "slow" walk moves them around at the same (ish) pace of a person. The limbs don't move very fast, but the Trolls as a whole still moves about at a reasonable speed.

But when do we see a troll move slower in the books? Also, they don't need to run or jog. Walking at a decent pace would be fast enough. And anyway, would it be enough? Also, he didn't argue anything like this when he was chasing me when I had Tanks AND Trolls, so I think that he's just stretching for something that will allow him to intercept me.

Now imagine an elephant with tons of heavy armour on it They also appear to have quite stubby legs, so that height advantage isn't much

Wasn't Hannibal in heavy armor? And the fact remains that we never see a troll move more slowly have a speedy human walk.
