"Thank you. I shall follow you, I think. I am ready to leave this place."
Lluc follows Karthon outside, where Alpida is waiting. They greet each other briefly before Alpida says, "We need more crew members. I do not think what we have will be enough. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only tavern. We will have to find another place."
A little hesitantly, Lluc interrupts her. "I'm afraid you have been misinformed. This isn't the only tavern. It's just the only one that, well, you'll see what I mean." He leads them across town to a short, wide building that has clearly seen better days. "Perhaps only the two of you should go in. I don't think they'll take kindly to too many of us."
Alpida agrees, placing a ready hand on her morning star in case of a trap. She leads Karthon inside, and they find what appears to be a very normal tavern, with one exception. Whereas the other tavern was occupied entirely be humans, save the dwarf Stijn, this one contains none other than Karthon himself.
Karthon followed the situation further into it's mundane chore of simply acquiring a crew, yet what happened next caught him completely off guard.
Witnessing this strange event after entering the dwelling, the seasoned rogue drew his short sword holding it ready. "What is this?" He whispered to no one in particular.
OOC: Just checking, Karthon is seeing himself?
OOC: No, sorry. I just meant that Karthon is the only human there.

OOC: Pardon me, it's just that the last part was a little confusing. Let me rewrite that...

On high alert he looked around but saw nothing and, with a question on his face, turned to his companion.

OOC: The tavern's quite full, actually. It just doesn't have any human patrons.
OOC: Heck, maybe I need more sleep. Sorry, didn't think of that. Take three...:
IC: Karthon followed the situation further into it's mundane chore of simply acquiring a crew and entered the dwelling with Alpida.
On high alert he looked around, and feeling out of place shuffled closer to Alpida. "I'll let you do the talking." He whispered to her. He glanced around the strange faces looking at him and naturally felt quite uncomfortable. He nervously fingered the hilts of his daggers sheathed at his hip.

OOC: It's fine.
IC: "As you wish." Alpida stands on a table and shouts, "Your attention is required!" Once everyone has settled down, she says, "I am in need of a crew for a mission. We are in need of a sailing master, a boatswain, and several other sailors. We will sail first to the Isle of the Gray, then to mainland Oruthal, and hopefully back here afterwards. You will each be paid triple the usual payment for a journey of this length." She steps back down, "Thank you for your attention."
An elf woman named Marina is the first to join them, and a few others follow. They find their sailing master in an orc man named Haik and their boatswain in a dwarf woman named Noor. Lastly, they are joined by a goblin woman named Sevan. As they move to leave, a black-furred minotaur man intercepts them, "What would be the purpose of your journey?"
"We are going to get an army to attack the Xain Empire, those who currently besiege Oruthal."
The minotaur smiles, "A worthy cause then. I am Dubhan Finnasoch. I will join you."
"Finnasoch. A mighty clan."
"Once, perhaps, but no more. That is why I am here and not still there."
Lluc and the two soldiers are waiting for them outside, "So this is the rest of our crew. Welcome aboard. Shall we go to meet our captain?" Alpida nods and they head off.
OOC: I just realized that I made a mistake. I said Lluc was a navigator, but he is actually a carpenter and surgeon.
OOC: Heck, maybe I need more sleep. Sorry, didn't think of that. Take three...:

Karthon stood by and watched the spectacle. While he dealt in more subtle ways, he liked the simple way in which Alpida handled with the situation.
The rogue follows behind the motley crew now hired, but keeping within sight of Alpida.

OOC: Just hope I can remember all this.
They soon arrive at the docks, where Aleix, Eloi, Stijn, Pere, and Beatriu are waiting. Alpida gives some quick introductions, while making it clear that they had all best get along, and leads them to the ship where Ferran is waiting, along with a battlescarred man and a small goblin. "Captain Ferran, I return with a crew as I promised." Alpida must have met with him while Karthon was in the first tavern.
"So you do. I trust that they fill all the necessary positions." Alpida nods. "Then let us be off. There is no time to waste." Everyone boards and the ship begins to sail.
OOC: It will take four IRL days to reach the first destination. Karthon can talk to the other crew members during this time if he wants. They are listed below.
Captain- Ferran Sailing Master (Navigator)- Haik Boatswain (Maintenance/Supplies)- Noor Carpenter/Surgeon- Lluc Master Gunner- Goncal (the scarred man) Mate (General Assistant)- Pavils (the goblin) Riggers- Eloi, Stijn, Marina Regular Sailors- Alpida, Aleix, Pere, Beatriu, Sevan, Dubhan Menial Laborers- Karthon, the two soldiers
Valithor and Casúr continue to fight even as they tire. Both of them begin to realize that defeat is a certainty at this point.
Valithor contemplates using a little bit of magic to thin the ranks of the Xain but decides against it, pushing the thought from his mind.
After many hours of battle, the two heroes are forced to pull back and rest for a little while. Both have suffered several wounds, and both have seen great horrors. After witnessing the brutality of the Xain firsthand they are determined to preserve the safety of the people of Oruthal for as long as humanly possible.

The ship arrives at a small, mostly barren island with few signs of life. They can see several buildings, but all look to have been uninhabited for quite some time. Alpida tells Ferran to anchor here and motions for Karthon and the two soldiers to follow her onto the shore. "Welcome to the Isle of the Gray."

Karthon followed Alpida to shore and took in his new surroundings. The rogue had seen many things... but prepared for the unexpected, as he realized afore the voyage that things would only become stranger to him.
He stretched and re-accustomed himself to the feeling of land beneath his feet, and awaited further instruction keeping on high alert.

Alpida begins to wander away, saying nothing. Slack-jawed and wide-eyed, her mind appears to be entirely elsewhere, and is only brought back to the present by the sound of boots crunching on the sand behind them. They turn to see Lluc, Dubhan, Marina, and Sevan standing on the beach. "We thought we'd come with." Alpida nods and continues walking.
They soon find themselves in the midst of the empty buildings. Up close, they are even more run down than they appeared from far away. If it weren't for solid construction, many of them might be little more than heaps of rubble. All of them are built in the same stark, utilitarian style, practical above all else. The town- or, more accurately, what must once have been a town- is built in a rigid grid pattern, with straight lines and equal spaces between each and every house. It almost looks more like a highly organized military camp than a place to live. After several minutes of walking, they leave the town and come into an area of rocky hills. Alpida begins moving very slowly, examining each and every nook and cranny until she appears to find what she is looking for. She reaches one hand down into a narrow crag and pulls back hard. A large boulder rolls aside in front of her, exposing a cave entrance. Alpida walks inside, motioning for the others to follow.

Karthon cautiously follows Alpida. Aware of her altered state he tenses, ready to draw his weapons if anything untoward should happen.

The cave goes quite far before abruptly transitioning into a steep, roughly carved staircase. Alpida continues walking. As they descend, it becomes quite dark, making it difficult to see the stairs. One of the soldiers trips, but Dubhan reaches out a steadying arm to catch him. Between the dark and the treacherous stairs, they are all forced to slow their pace so as not to trip, and they soon fall behind Alpida and the nimble, sharp-eyed Sevan.

Alpida doesn't seem to hear him. Lluc sighs, "Nothing to do but keep moving, I guess."
