Episode Four: Friends and Fights
The sun was going down as Dillila paced around on the walk outside the school. Israel watched her and felt saddened. “He’s not coming back today,” He said. “And I think we both know why.” She stopped pacing and turned toward him, shivering a little in the bitter wind. “Let’s wait a little longer. He always walks home with us.” Her blue eyes were sad and nervous as she looked up at him. He looked down at her and his features softened. “Dill, It’s different tonight.” He said gently. “We’ve been here for about an hour waiting for him.” He smiled a little. “Let’s go, ok, I know you’re freezing.” Dillila looked for a moment at him, then sadly nodded. “You’re right. Sorry for making you stand here all evening.” She said, “And I am totally frozen.” She smiled. “Hey no problem. I’ll stand around anytime for you.” He answered honestly as they started walking to Dillila’s home to do homework. “And don’t worry, he’ll be fine.” He assured. Meanwhile at Dullard’s University. Markus slipped into the alleyway as instructed via text and looked around. Seeing the kid waiting for him, like he was told would happen, so he walked over. As he approached the skinny kid stuck his hand out. “Ah, Mark! Good to see you! Come inside.” Markus was pulled into a back door and dragged rapidly down several corridors. Then they reached a hallway that looked down steep stone steps to an ominous metal door. The kid led him down the steps and threw the door open. Inside it was brightly lit, and there were dozens of people standing around who all turned as the door banged inward. Past all the college aged kids confused faces Markus could see there was a ring set up. And in this ring was a rather large, rather mean looking man. Markus glanced over at the kid with a panicked face. “Um who’s that?” He whispered as he was led behind the scenes. Rolling his eyes the kid responded. “That’s The Wrecker, duh. The one who challenged you, the note, remember?” He said in that squeaky voice. Then seeing Markus’s rather green look he added quickly. “But don’t worry! You have the edge.” His eyes cut around the room slyly. Markus tried to quiet his stomach. “And what’s that?” He asked, his voice quavering a little. The skinny kid handed him a pair of what looked like cyculist’s shorts. “Put that on.” He instructed then answered. “You have the element of surprise.” He smiled triumphantly but Markus couldn’t see it, the kid was facing away from him as Markus changed. “You’re so small, he’ll underestimate you for sure. His ego is as big as he is. And that’ll be your edge.” Markus looked skeptical as he said. “I’m done. And I’m also thinking that maybe… maybe this wasn’t my best idea.” The skinny kid whirled around and squinted at him. “You are not backing out.”
He jabbed a finger at Markus. “You are going on, my reputation is staked on this.” Markus wasn’t sure how much he cared about the skinny kid’s, probably checkered, reputation. But just then someone came in and asked. “Yo Billy. You ready with your special guest?” Billy, as the guy had called the skinny kid nodded, still looking at Markus. “He’s ready. Announce him as…” He whispered to Markus. “What do you wanna be called?” Markus thought for a moment, then with a stroke of self proclaimed genius he responded. “Call me Mojo.” The guy looked incredulous. “Just Mojo, no like ‘Killer Mojo’ or ‘Smash your ribs Mojo’? He questioned. Markus shook his head. “Just Mojo.” Billy rolled his eyes again. The guy shrugged. “Okkkk….” And left the room. A moment later The Wrecker came backstage and stood a few feet away, waiting. Then they heard a hush fall over the crowd and a loud booming voice cried out in the quiet. “Welcome all, to tonight's fight!” A cheer rose and faded. “Today we have an old favorite. To the ring,” His voice dipped menacingly. “The Wrecker!” A loud clamor of cheers and whoops and hollers erupted as the huge man crashed out onto the stage and started working the crowd. “And for our other contestant, Billy's mystery man!” Another cheer. “To the ring, Mojo!” Markus found himself trotting out into the ring, lights hit him and the crowd roared, then died down and stared. Someone from the crowd called out. “Hey, in’t that kid a bit small?” Markus recognized the voice as the heckler from SkullDuggery’s rally. The announcer called out. “He may be small but Billy assures me, and all those who bet in his favor, that this kid can beat the odds.” Markus looked out at the crowd and started to feel dizzy. They all whispered and glanced and looked generally either prematurely triumphant, or disappointed. Before he realized it, they were squaring off and the announcer called out. “Round one!” And a bell dinged. The mountain of a man moved surprisingly quickly across the mat. He had good form and better reaction time, he stepped close and jabbed and was gone again. Markus reeled and staggered into the ropes. Then righting himself and looked around to see The Wrecker circling calmly. Markus felt the adrenaline roar through him and he and The Wrecker became the only two in the room. He was in a good zone and was able to dodge the next several hits. The Wrecker was equally swift moving. It seemed to Markus that he just couldn’t gain that edge that Billy spoke of. Two more rounds went by with them dancing a perilous dance. Then in the fourth round they were doing the usual bob and slide and tuck routine when all the sudden The Wrecker switched his footing and dodged to the side. As he did so he landed a terrific blow right to Markus’s face. Markus felt searing pain that made his head spin. He tripped backwards and suddenly was looking up at the ceiling. His vision swam and made the bright lights dance in a sickening way.
He felt oddly cold and the pain was overwhelming. Suddenly he had the startling realization that he might retch. Before he had come to his senses he was being hulled to his feet. As his head began to clear a bit he heard the rush of the crowd erupting in cheers and cries of disappointment all mingled into one overwhelming chorus. He was pulled out of the ring and shoved behind the scenes. His head was much clearer now and he looked around to see it was Billy and the announcer who had pulled him out of the way as The Wrecker did his victory routine. Billy was looking rather agitated. “Well, at least the lead up was good….” The announcer commented as he left. “Till that major KO.” Billy scowled at the comment. Markus felt his wounded face and grimaced. “Sorry, I… I wasn’t prepared for that.” Billy noded. “That was clear enough.” He squeeked. He seemed to think for a moment then come to some sort of conclusion. “You know what Mojo, you weren’t too bad out there. You’ve got good reaction time, and I know you have the strength if you could get a hit in.” He said tossing Markus’s street clothes at him. Markus caught the wad and answered as he changed. “Yeah funny thing, you never mentioned that he was a professional boxer.” His voice sounded tight as he pulled on his jacket and sat down to tie his shoes. “And I’m done.” Bill, who was facing away from him to give him a spot of privacy, turned around. His hands began to wring again. “I figured you understood who The Wrecker was.” He said in a snide voice. “And besides, you’ll have another chance.” He shrugged slightly as if this explained things. Markus looked puzzled. “What do you mean by that?” He asked as he was escorted to the door by Billy.
Back at Dillila’s house she and Israel were sitting at the counter in the kitchen pretending to do homework. In reality they were wrapped in their own thoughts. She was scooting her pencil around on the table distractedly and staring blankly at the page. Her mouth was set in a worried line and her brows were drawn together. Israel was looking at her and ignoring his Geography. His mind was turning and he sat quietly trying to decide what to do. Eventually he made up his mind and asked her. “Hey, what’s up?” She looked over at him and took a moment to respond. When she did she said. “I I just wonder… if maybe… maybe if I had said something different, maybe if I had reacted differently I could have stopped him from going…” She looked down at the counter and rolled her pencil between two fingers, swallowing hard. Several thoughts crossed his mind. He wasn’t the greatest at deciphering emotions, but he felt something inside driving him to do something to help, somehow. He tried to think out the best course of action. He was quiet for a while then as if a sudden dam had broken, he reached over and pulled her close to him and told her with a steady, confident, voice. “Markus makes his own choices. He would have gone no matter what you said, this is not your fault. So stop being silly.” Dillila was surprised at first by the sudden movement. But as she sat wrapped in his arms she began to relax. She let his words calm her and muttered. “I guess you’re right.” She smiled at his last sentence. She was being a bit silly, she supposed. “Thank you, Yis.” She said as she let her head rest on his chest. They sat there in silence for a moment, just enjoying the closeness. Israel enjoyed the feeling of having fixed the situation and the feeling of Dillila’s steady breathing. Dillila sat warm and calm hardly daring to blink, hopping not to break the spell that held them there. Then a voice broke the quiet. “What are you kids up to?” Elissa stood in the kitchen squinting at them. Israel felt Dillila jump and start to push him away. But he wrapped his arms persuasively around her, gentle but firm in his movements, and drew her against himself again as he answered. “You know us Essa, we’re up to no good.” He grinned at Elissa. Elissa scrutinized the pair of them. Dillila realized that, while a tad embarrassing to be caught in a tender moment, they were doing nothing wrong, and Israel felt her relax in his arms again. She peeked over his arm at her older sister and smiled. “Is something wrong?” she said angelically. Elissa looked a little longer at the two. “No. … not yet anyway.” She grabbed a snack as she responded. Then watching them the whole way out she left the room. Israel looked down at Dillila and she looked up at him. They started to laugh, their laughter growing louder and more energetic the more they laughed.
They laughed for several moments then they both tried to catch their breath. Gasping, Israel told Dillila. “We… we should probably.. Get back to homework.” Then laughing some more as they began to work on their homework. The sour mood affectively lifted.
