Alright, let me take a swing at this thread with something I came up with in 8th grade... Prepare to cringe, for the topic/plot goes all over the place, and there is no true rhyming scheme, which makes it a bit difficult to discern rhythm and tempo.
Tećrans Fight: The Warrior of Winter
I tread through the snow, With Alúmanam, my blade, And the Frost, it bites, As mankind's bane.
I challenge mine enemies they of the Frost, By thousands and thousands a score, Yet more are replaced then had ever been before. As I trudge, I am caught, and my ankles are locked, And I fear for my life, that has not yet begun. But I force myself free, and slay them that grasped, And they fall to blend in with the cold harsh white mask.
And through the hoar, That gift of Frore, O'ershadowed by none, But by the son of Fuarú the Victor the adversary of all, the one who will slay me if e'er I fall.
I ponder my love Oh what utter humanity, When she one day discovers my true mortality When i lay, gored and forgotten, Silent as stone, And oh, the pain of perishing alone
My strength is diminished, All hope is now lost, But fight on, I must, What e're the cost, Though their blows be e're increasing, My passion be unceasing, And so onward I fight, Through chilling day and frigid night, That mankinds struggle, and lettaru's plight Shall soon be ended. Oh that it might!
This futile struggle, though it seems all for not, Is great amongst gifts of splendor, wrought, that it may Grant The Aged One relief, and shorten their strife, Against the cold that wields a knife.
And so I fight, I conquer and slay, With my aluminum sword, a true weapon, nay. But a shovel, and the enemy is no more then snow, And the edge of the road is as far as I go. I trudge through snow, be it an inch, a foot, more, Though steep is the struggle that is laid out before, So onward I push, with no power but of will, Till ice, my bane, and my enemy I kill.
My reward is not held, nor seen, but by me, 'tis a smile of gratitude for this passage of safety.
Yet soon shalt the summer sun drive the thawed thralls away, To let all mankind laugh, run, and play, But until then, dear reader, what is to become, Of the warrior of winter, till his duty is done?
Wow. . . this feels like something from LotR. . . what an amazing job!
Thank you so much! I never was (and still am not) able to write a decent narrative, unless its in poetry format, in which case i can get away with plot holes and impossible situations cause art and expression and overdramatization. Also, Tolkien is a great inspiration to me. All of his works, and the detail he put into them, make me fell very inadequate in the shadow of such a giant amongst men and authors, especially when I r ad my own writings. And his poetry is some of the best I think I've ever read. If you would like (and if it is permitted) I can put a favorite excerpt of mine from Beren and Luthien in a post... Also, I like your new profile picture! Does it reference some fandom, or is it entirely your own design, because I love the kabuki/court of the owls theme going on in it

You're welcome! Oh, I know what you mean! Tolkien inspires me too, in terms of both his world-building and the songs he writes. Oh, of course, go ahead! ^.^ Why, thank you! It's mostly my own design, but I suppose it's also a reference to a piece of old Japanese culture referring the magical shapeshifting kitsune. I looked up what kitsune masks look like and copied that, while the gold pattern on the kimono is the same pattern a character from Ninjago wears on her outfit.

Tolkien is really one of the best authors of the 20th century in my opinion, even though he was only active for the first half or so. I've seen some of your writing, and I'm curious, do you participate in National Novel Writing Month? I'll have to post the excerpt in a different post, because its so long, but his rhyming schemes are really something, in part because of how simple and flowing they are, and how he is able to keep in going with a format that is both structured and free at the same time almost. Its rather odd, compared to some of the other poetry that I've read, especially those that have narratives, as most are extraordinarily straight-laced in their schemes, comprimising them very little.
Neat! I know very little about Japanese folklore (though it looks very interesing, I'm too far down the rabbit hole that is western European folklore at the moment!). Instead, the few things I know about Japan mostly pertain to a few cultural aspects and their history from the mid-19th century to the mid 20th, because its extremely interiguing to me how far they were able to advance technologically in such short time, due to certain aspects and advancments. It always amazes me as to how they went from black powder to dogfighting almost overnight, compared to a few other countries...

No, I can't say I've participated in National Novel Writing Month, although it does sound impressive. Unfortunately I've never taken part in any contest like that. Hmm, that's interesting. I admit I've never noticed that type of thing in his poems--probably because I haven't taken much note of poetry in general. But, still, it really is cool. Do you study poetry?
(Hehe, I know what you mean. xD) That's true, it's incredible. I'd like to research the entire history of Japan sometime as a whole, but especially take a look into the culture, warfare and folklore.

Its not necessarily a contest, its more of a challenge and motivational tool to get people writing. I haven't written much in the past few years, but this contest has got me writing outlines and brainstorming every other day, in preparation for the trainwreck that it'll turn out to be. yeah, I "study" poetry about as much as any American Highschooler (well, a bit more because i do it on my own time on occasion, but not that much... ALso, I have a question. I've been pondering joining the homeschooler hangout thread, but have no idea if homeschoolers think cyberschoolers are technically homeschoolers or not. Some of my formerly-home-now-cyber friends think it kinda is, some of my die-hard-co-op-forever-never-let-bricknmortars-tell-you-what-is-cool-homeschool friends think it isn't. Whats the general consensus around here?)

So much to read, so little time....
Ohh, gotcha. Hmm. That does sound like it's worth looking into. . . How does it work? Hehe, makes sense. Oh, you don't have to worry. Honestly, everyone is very relaxed and easy-going about who hangs out in what chatroom, probably because we have a lot of people with a lot of different educations together. I'm sure you'll be fine if you join the hangout! ^.^
