Its original name is Sternhalma, an 1892 German variation of an American game Halma made circa 1884 ("Stern" from the German word for "star", and "Halma" from the Greek word ἅλμα for "jump"). Meanwhile, Halma is derived from an English game called Hoppity invented in 1854. It was marketed as Chinese Checkers in the US in 1928. In Chinese, the game is known as 跳棋 (tiaoqui, "jump game").
