IC: Reading about the Treaty of Kasp, Valerie learns that it was written a thousand years ago to end the war of the Southern Kingdoms against the Stag Kingdom and to prevent any new power rising in the Great Forest. It established an organization called the Kaspik Wardens to watch over the Great Forest and prevent armies and kingdoms from being established there and to protect the people living there from its dangers. To maintain the peace, the three Southern Kingdoms were barred from ever establishing any presence in the Great Forest, a condition to be enforced by the Kaspik Wardens and by one another. Is there any specific information she would like to look for?
After a long time, the maid sees two messengers enter the room and leave shortly afterwards.
IC: Valerie looks for any information regarding the Kaspik Wardens, and their activities since the signing of the treaty.
The maid follows the messengers at a distance.
There is quite a bit available from the very beginning, detailing how they built their force and the initial dealings with them. But details slowly dwindle and Valerie is unable to find any mentions at all of the Kaspik Wardens from the past few hundred years.
After they leave Urbien's office, the messengers head out of the castle and split apart. One rides to the northeast, the other to the southeast.

Pleased by her findings, Valerie reads through the dealings between the Wardens and the Kingdoms.
Once the messengers leave the castle, the maid returns to the corridor outside Urbien's office.

Much of the early material is about how the Southern Kingdoms supported the building of the Kaspik Wardens and the early actions of the group. She finds that there were a handful of incursions by the Southern Kingdoms over the centuries, especially during the few hundred year span following the first couple centuries after the Wardens' establishment. These were quickly quenched without much violence, and they soon stopped. The leaders of the Kaspik Wardens and Southern Kingdoms at the time are mentioned. There are also mentions of attacks from the north, but there is very little detail on these.

Lady Valerie notes the names of the mentioned Warden leaders, and searches for more information on them.

There is not much she can find. All of those leaders were chosen from the peoples of the Great Forest for their talents in combat and leadership. The original group seems to have been mostly humans, but later mentions describe an increasingly varied mixture of species.

After reading all there is to be found, Valerie finishes her search for information and busies herself with preparing to travel.
Once the maid gets back to the corridor outside Urbien's office, she waits until there are no passing servants and moves towards the door, hoping to hear a snatch of conversation through the crack.

The maid is able to hear muffled snatches of conversation but it seems they have finished with business and she is unable to pick up anything of interest. Soon, she hears footsteps approaching the door.

She walks, softly but hastily, towards the end of the corridor. If she is able to get to it before the door opens, she hides behind the corner; if she is not, she acts as though she is just walking past whilst carrying out an errand.

She manages to get around the corner just as she hears the door slowly swing open. Two sets of footsteps approach, and as they pass the side passage they continue walking without noticing her. She can see Lord Urbien and the visitor Lord Cyril walking away.

The maid waits for a few seconds, then follows the two at a safe distance to see where they are going.

They head out of the castle, where Lord Cyril mounts his horse and begins to ride away.
Turning back to the castle, Lord Urbien spots her. "You there! Find Lady Valerie and bring her to me!"
"Yes, m'lord," answers the maid, curtsying and hastening off, concealing her relief at Lord Urbien not questioning why she was there. She goes to Lady Valerie's rooms, whence Valerie comes with surprising speed for one so aged, going straight to Lord Urbien's study and tapping the door loudly with her cane.
