If you don't have kidneys in the first place, I'm not really sure whether or not you'll be alive to worry about the side effects of some weird medicine.
My dad has no kidneys, he's still alive.
Really? First off I'm sorry if your dad suffers at all. I thought you couldn't survive without kidney's though?

Science and modern medicine helps. He does 3 days a week of 4 hours connected to a dialysis machine, so basically that does what kidneys normally do. He'll be moving to about 2/3 hours a day 5-6 times a week at the end of the month hopefully which will be a lot better for him since actual kidneys do their job 24/7.

Wow. I have heard of dialysis, I had thought it was only to assist not replace. Well it's good that he can move around some. Is he on a donor list?

Yeah, it can do both, there is a lot of technical stuff that goes into the differences between someone being assisted by dialysis and someone needing to do dialysis because they have no kidneys but that's probably for another time and place. He isn't on a transplant list yet, he has to wait until 2020 before he can be even considered without automatic rejection.

Oh, I didn't know that, until now I mean. Oh, okay. How does he spend the time he has in between? (If you don't mind my pestering you with all these questions. )

He can basically do what he wants in between dialysis. He still does work and stuff (he's self-employed so he basically cut down his work by about 50%) but he can have bad days where he's tired or there's some other issue (I won't bother talking about them). He's also restricted in terms of what he's allowed to eat and drink but he's getting used to that since for food it's just a case of adapting stuff you like but he misses chips (fries if you are American) mainly in terms of food.

That's nice! Oh, my dad's starting to self-employ himself too, such a small world. It would be fries. Ah, so your European then?
