“In that case, it’s now mine.” Mateo put it on, and resumed the search. “Well, that’s exciting. Gonna film it?”
“I don’t know that I’ll have to.”
“You think…you think you’re gonna be on TV?”
“I can’t imagine they’ll pass up the chance to get me televised. The only reason they haven’t yet is because I don’t have a set schedule.”
He pulled out a TV remote. “That’s funny.”
“What?”
He held it up. “We don’t have a TV.”
“I think it just lives there.”
He stuffed it back in.
“I’m also thinking of doing a face reveal.”
He finally gave up going through the couch cushions and gave me all his attention. “Now that would be revolutionary.” He paused, digesting this. “Celeste is gonna flip.”
“Yeah, well, she’s gonna flip no matter when or where, so I might as well get it over with. And it’s time to come out of the box.”
A soccer ball thudded off the wall outside. “This place won’t just be the hot hub for the town then, will it? They’ll find you.”
“We can always use some more players.” I shrugged. “This is what I’ve always wanted it to be like, though. I’ve dreamed of having kids taking the bus across the country just so they can play a round with me. It makes me seem a bit of a snob, but that’s the thing, the bigs don’t even do that. I want the people to have a physical icon. Something tangible, on the map.”
"You’ve come a long way.” Mateo said, looking at me intently.
“We’ve come a long way.” I corrected him.
He grinned. “Tag me in the photo when you do it. We might as well do a double face-reveal.”
THIS IS THE MOMENT!!!!! *dubstep blasts from the speakers* HYPE!!! O.O : D
I bought some off-brand Doritos and some Vitamin Waters, sent out a group text, and got about 50 kids to show up for a night of gaming, with more filtering in all the time. We were all over, crammed on the couches and the floor. The room smelt funny, but nobody complained. Banter was passed back and forth. We had resolved to start the night off by doing a mass run-through of some old levels, everybody logged on and we started gathering at a coffee shop. I slowly pulled my laptop out of the sleeve, and booted it up. I grabbed my phone real quick, though, and stood up atop my couch. “Hey guys, can we get a photo?”
We snapped a quick selfie, trying to stuff 50 kids into one small phone screen. It captured the feeling though. I minimized the game, and switched to my Geronimo account. I logged in, and then quickly posted the photo. Caption: “Ready for a night of gaming with my crew.”
I logged into the game, pulling my laptop up in front of my face to hide my smile.
The first guy got ahold of it about twelve seconds later. “Hey…that’s us.”
At first, nobody paid him any attention. So he screamed it at the top of his lungs. “OUR PHOTO JUST SHOWED UP ON THEGREATCON’S FEED!”
That shut everybody up, and then the room exploded with questions. Somebody had the brilliant idea of pulling the thing up on a wall screen so everybody could see it. They waited breathlessly, all crowded around, rubbing shoulders and shoving each other good-naturedly.
Our selfie popped up.
“Who posted it?” Celeste asked, addressing the room.
“No, you don’t get it!” The guy said. “This isn’t somebody’s post on TheGreatCon’s feed. He posted it!”
It took them another twelve seconds to process then. And slowly, the whole room turned to look at me, where I sitting on the floor, laptop in my lap, giving them a bemused look.
