Here are my thoughts on
The Eye of the World , now with 45% more controversy.
So . . . I liked the book. It's probably important to say that now, so you can keep it in mind when I complain later.
I
loved the first 2/3 of the book, the ruggedness, the wonder, the tension . . .
{spoilers for book 1:}
The scene with Mordeth in Shadar Logoth, specifically, was awesome.
Running down the hall as the torches go out behind them. . . .
Love me some shivers when I'm reading fantasy.
Most fun I've had with a book in a while.
Then . . . I hit the last 1/3.

By which I mean everything after Perrin gets rescued.
And that's when the story took a few turns I didn't really appreciate.
{book 1 spoilers:}
The part with Gawyn and Elayne . . . eh, it felt like such obvious character setup for later books I kind of balked. It didn't really fit with the rest of the book.
The whole first two-thirds were leading up to one thing, and then it got switched around and said, "Nope! now we're gonna do this other thing!" It felt forced, and I would've liked to see a more organic twist.
{book 1 spoilers:}
Ba'alzamon constantly shouting, "The Eye of the World will never serve you!" in Rand's dreams didn't really do it for me, as a setup.
Also, when they finally got to the Eye, they looked at it, got scared when it dissolved a rock Mat kicked in, then left. It didn't seem to factor into the plot, even when it did.
Then the Forsaken showed up, and the book lost me. I'd forgotten who the Forsaken were, (so, OK, that's not really the book's fault
) and then the whole thing was over waaaaaaay faster than it had started.
The last few chapters brought it back for me, thankfully.
On the whole, it was good, but with room for improvement, I thought.
Also, I tend to be overly analytical, so . . .
