He is imprisoned. Unless your talking about the prologue, if that's what you are talking about I don't remember.
The prologue is about Lews Therin and the beginning of the Breaking. And the Dark One talks to him, so I'm assuming he is not imprisoned.
Eh, that was Ishamael there, because he wasn't properly imprisoned/was imprisoned near the edge so he got free every 500 or so years. Those years coincided with the greatest events in the history of WoT, such as the Trolloc Wars, amongst other things. He is also free (Ishamael) at the start of the series, although he's a little more crazy by then (1000s of years imprisoned tend to do that )
One mod to rule them all and in the darkness ban them - Lord of the Mods "I am the Mod Reborn!" - masterlegobuilders I'm the real boss

That guy in the castle was the Dark One? I thought he was a Darkfriend.
I assume by the castle you mean Lews Therin's house? That was a darkfriend. THE darkfriend you might say. He was the 'leader' of the Forsaken. Not named Nae'blis yet though, so not the official leader but still. It's... Ishamael

Oh. I was confused when I first read that chapter, because well, duh, it's kind of confusing when you don't know anything about Wheel of Time yet. But I thought he said his name was

{JAMMERS! -Dangerous Name-Speakers- ONLY!} I think the one whose name is dangerous to speak is worse. He Who Must Not Be Named is mostly not named out of fear; the other guy's name can actually make bad (read: plot ) stuff happen to you, supposedly.

{JAMMERS! same} The former. Saying the Dark One's name actually has real consequences. Saying Voldemort's name is just something people are afraid of for no good reason.
