Byzantium was a very interesting case, yes. But their long lasting was really just slow shrinking.
If you include the Ottoman Empire as the successor state of the Byzantine Empire (I personally don't), Rome lasted from 509 BC to AD 1919 -- 2,428 years.
Actually Rome was around earlier, it started in 753BC and had 7 kings up until 509 when it was made a republic.
I used to LOVE history at school but now I don't like it as much. Anyone want to talk about the Ancient Greeks or Ancient Romans?
Do you live in the UK, cos that's exactly what you learn about on the Classical Civilisation course? Alright, why did the Spartans strategy suck so much?

Alright, I'm here, Wehrmacht time -- I mean WWII time.
WWII is a big discussion, what do you want to talk about in it?
Decoys! Did you know there was a British ship that carried no guns but was equipped with logs and broomsticks to give the impression that the Brits had more firepower than they actually had? I thing the ship was called the HMS Centurion or something like that.

The Spartans did not suck, they had the most powerful army in anchaint greace. And where almost undefeatabal. Though they did suffer from there stubbornness and unwillingness to adapt new tactics.

Ay; I was basing it on the foundation of the Republic. I like this place.

There were so many awesome decoy operations during the war...
But I think Operation Habbakuk to be the most amazing Allied project next to the atomic bomb. Check it out.
