It had several periods of resurgence, though, i believe, including one where italy was brought under it's control.

That sounds interesting. I don't know that much about the Byzantine Empire, aside from the basic.
What are some interesting facts?
They had some of the most powerful heavy infantry in the medieval times. They where also one of the few kingdoms that used a combined arms stragity rather than just a knight charge.

If you include the Ottoman Empire as the successor state of the Byzantine Empire (I personally don't), Rome lasted from 509 BC to AD 1919 -- 2,428 years.
